With the Black Friday quickly approaching, do you know what to buy and what to avoid? Shops open at midnight or Thanksgiving Day and most of them keep the discounts through the weekend.
Tod Marks, a senior editor at Consumer Reports, says that shopper should be very careful when it comes to lowball pricing as products which get discounts are not always of the best quality. For example a 46-inch LCD television could be priced at $350, but it is not a top-of-the-line 3-D model, but it is still good if you want it for the children’s room. Television prices also fall in January as this is the period when new products come on the shelves and the old ones have to be quickly sold.
“If you don’t need something that’s very high-end, it’s the perfect time to buy,” said Dan de Grandpre, Dealnews.com editor in chief and CEO.
When it comes to tablets, the ones which will get discounts are the ones with less than 4Gb memory and slower processors, but they will still have 7-inch screens, and they are good as a start off lower-price version before you decide to buy an iPad.
Regarding the laptops, it’s the same story as the one with tablets: less memory and inferior processors, but you can still use them for the basic computer functions such as playing Solitaire and checking your email.
You may fin a good deal buying boxed sets or complete seasons of television shows as the prices offered during the Black Friday won’t be seen for months or even a year, according to de Grandpre. He also sad that this is a good time to buy cookware sets and infrequently used kitchen electrics, such as fondue pots.
“Black Friday is the day to get those things you’re not going to use so often at supercheap prices,” he says.
De Grandpre also said that even if the selves are stocked with toys, this is not the time when they are the cheapest. It’s the week of Cyber Monday when prices fall at thousands of products, including name brands such as Fisher-Price and Lego.
“The retailers just don’t want to keep that inventory,” de Grandpre says. After the holidays pass, demand will drop precipitously. “There are just not enough kids’ birthdays then,” he says.
You can take your mind off luxury items as they won’t get a discount this period, except for Apple store which for the past 7 years has offered discounts on Black Friday.
