Makeup has fascinated women since ancient times and today we have thousands of makeup products to choose from. But do we really know all the risks the cosmetic products imply and how much harm we do to our bodies?
Recently scientists from Washington University in St. Louis discovered that the phthalates contained by many of these products put us at risk of early-onset menopause. According to data gathered through the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey it was determined that women with the highest level of phthalates in their systems enter menopause 2 or 3 years earlier.
“Phthalates can disrupt your hormonal makeup,” says Dr. Laura Corio, an obstetrician at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City.
The phthalates in our system is able to mimic and chemically change hormones, such as estrogen, responsible for regulating our period. Once this hormone is affected, the body is confused and therefore it can cause irregular periods, one of the first signs of menopause. Once the phthalates enters the bloodstream it begins to harm the body and wreak havoc on the system.
Unfortunately Phthalates or phthalate esters are used in numerous products to increase durability, longevity, flexibility and transparency. Government are trying to phase out the chemical from many products in the US, Canada and EU due to heath concerns.
