Yesterday, November 20th, former champion boxer Hector “Macho” Camacho was shot in the city of Bayamon, near San Juan, Puerto Rico.
He was seriously wounded but doctors said he will survive. The 50-year-old boxer was shot while he was in his car with another man, in the city of Bayamon. The man next to him was killed. Camacho was quickly taken to the trauma center in San Juan, Centro Medico, where doctors managed to bring him to a stable condition. The bullet which struck him in the jaw exited his head and hit the right shoulder, fracturing two vertebrae. Dr. Ernesto Torres said that Camacho is at risk of paralysis.
Camacho representative Steve Tannenbaum said that they were considering a comeback, even if the former boxer is 50 years old. Camacho’s last title was in 1997 when he defeated hen-welterweight champion Oscar De La Hoya. Camacho was planning to fight again in 2010, but his opponent pulled out and they postponed the fight for 2013.
Although Camacho won numerous world titles, his passed was shadowed by drug use, domestic abuse complaints from his wife and a burglary charge in 2005, for which he was sentenced to five years in prison, but later suspended on probation.
